Synopsis
The remote Amazon Linux AMI host is missing a security update.
Description
The version of samba installed on the remote host is prior to 4.10.16-18.59. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the ALAS-2022-1564 advisory.
- The Samba vfs_fruit module uses extended file attributes (EA, xattr) to provide ...enhanced compatibility with Apple SMB clients and interoperability with a Netatalk 3 AFP fileserver. Samba versions prior to 4.13.17, 4.14.12 and 4.15.5 with vfs_fruit configured allow out-of-bounds heap read and write via specially crafted extended file attributes. A remote attacker with write access to extended file attributes can execute arbitrary code with the privileges of smbd, typically root. (CVE-2021-44142)
- A flaw was found in the way samba implemented SMB1 authentication. An attacker could use this flaw to retrieve the plaintext password sent over the wire even if Kerberos authentication was required. (CVE-2016-2124)
- A flaw was found in the way Samba maps domain users to local users. An authenticated attacker could use this flaw to cause possible privilege escalation. (CVE-2020-25717)
- A flaw was found in samba. The Samba smbd file server must map Windows group identities (SIDs) into unix group ids (gids). The code that performs this had a flaw that could allow it to read data beyond the end of the array in the case where a negative cache entry had been added to the mapping cache. This could cause the calling code to return those values into the process token that stores the group membership for a user. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to data confidentiality and integrity. (CVE-2021-20254)
Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.
Solution
Run 'yum update samba' to update your system.

How to Run
Here is how to run the Amazon Linux AMI : samba (ALAS-2022-1564) as a standalone plugin via the Nessus web user interface (https://localhost:8834/):
- Click to start a New Scan.
- Select Advanced Scan.
- Navigate to the Plugins tab.
- On the top right corner click to Disable All plugins.
- On the left side table select Amazon Linux Local Security Checks plugin family.
- On the right side table select Amazon Linux AMI : samba (ALAS-2022-1564) plugin ID 158192.
- Specify the target on the Settings tab and click to Save the scan.
- Run the scan.
Here are a few examples of how to run the plugin in the command line. Note that the examples below demonstrate the usage on the Linux / Unix platform.
Basic usage:
/opt/nessus/bin/nasl ala_ALAS-2022-1564.nasl -t <IP/HOST>
Run the plugin with audit trail message on the console:
/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -a ala_ALAS-2022-1564.nasl -t <IP/HOST>
Run the plugin with trace script execution written to the console (useful for debugging):
