Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 20.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-5381-1 advisory.

- A kernel information leak flaw was identified in the scsi_ioctl function in drivers/scsi/scsi_ioctl.c in the Linux kernel. This flaw allows a local attacker with a special user privilege (CAP_SYS_ADMIN or CAP_SYS_RAWIO) to create issues with confidentiality. (CVE-2022-0494)

- A memory leak flaw was found in the Linux kernel's DMA subsystem, in the way a user calls DMA_FROM_DEVICE. This flaw allows a local user to read random memory from the kernel space. (CVE-2022-0854)

- A flaw use after free in the Linux kernel FUSE filesystem was found in the way user triggers write(). A local user could use this flaw to get some unauthorized access to some data from the FUSE filesystem and as result potentially privilege escalation too. (CVE-2022-1011)

- drivers/usb/gadget/legacy/inode.c in the Linux kernel through 5.16.8 mishandles dev->buf release. (CVE-2022-24958)

- st21nfca_connectivity_event_received in drivers/nfc/st21nfca/se.c in the Linux kernel through 5.16.12 has EVT_TRANSACTION buffer overflows because of untrusted length parameters. (CVE-2022-26490)

- An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel before 5.16.12. drivers/net/usb/sr9700.c allows attackers to obtain sensitive information from heap memory via crafted frame lengths from a device. (CVE-2022-26966)

- In drivers/usb/gadget/udc/udc-xilinx.c in the Linux kernel before 5.16.12, the endpoint index is not validated and might be manipulated by the host for out-of-array access. (CVE-2022-27223)

- In the Linux kernel before 5.17.1, a refcount leak bug was found in net/llc/af_llc.c. (CVE-2022-28356)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected packages.

How to Run

Here is how to run the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel (OEM) vulnerabilities (USN-5381-1) as a standalone plugin via the Nessus web user interface (https://localhost:8834/):

  1. Click to start a New Scan.
  2. Select Advanced Scan.
  3. Navigate to the Plugins tab.
  4. On the top right corner click to Disable All plugins.
  5. On the left side table select Ubuntu Local Security Checks plugin family.
  6. On the right side table select Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Linux kernel (OEM) vulnerabilities (USN-5381-1) plugin ID 160026.
  7. Specify the target on the Settings tab and click to Save the scan.
  8. Run the scan.

Here are a few examples of how to run the plugin in the command line. Note that the examples below demonstrate the usage on the Linux / Unix platform.

Basic usage:

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl ubuntu_USN-5381-1.nasl -t <IP/HOST>

Run the plugin with audit trail message on the console:

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -a ubuntu_USN-5381-1.nasl -t <IP/HOST>

Run the plugin with trace script execution written to the console (useful for debugging):
