CPE [?]: cpe:/a:ibm:java

Synopsis

IBM Java is affected by multiple vulnerabilities.

Description

The version of IBM Java installed on the remote host is prior to 7.0 < 7.0.10.40 / 7.1 < 7.1.4.40 / 8.0 < 8.0.5.30. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the Oracle January 15 2019 CPU advisory.

- An issue was discovered in libjpeg 9a and 9d. The alloc_sarray function in jmemmgr.c allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error) via a crafted file. (CVE-2018-11212)

- Vulnerability in the Java SE component of Oracle Java SE (subcomponent: Libraries). Supported versions that are affected are Java SE: 7u201, 8u192 and 11.0.1; Java SE Embedded: 8u191. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Java SE accessible data. Note: This vulnerability applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets (in Java SE 8), that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. This vulnerability does not apply to Java deployments, typically in servers, that load and run only trusted code (e.g., code installed by an administrator). (CVE-2019-2422)

- Vulnerability in the Java SE component of Oracle Java SE (subcomponent: Networking). Supported versions that are affected are Java SE: 7u201, 8u192 and 11.0.1; Java SE Embedded: 8u191. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE. This vulnerability can also be exploited by using APIs in the specified Component, e.g., through a web service which supplies data to the APIs. (CVE-2019-2426)

- Vulnerability in the Java SE component of Oracle Java SE (subcomponent: Deployment). The supported version that is affected is Java SE: 8u192. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Java SE. (CVE-2019-2449)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Apply the appropriate patch according to the Oracle January 15 2019 CPU advisory.

How to Run

Here is how to run the IBM Java 7.0 < 7.0.10.40 / 7.1 < 7.1.4.40 / 8.0 < 8.0.5.30 Multiple Vulnerabilities as a standalone plugin via the Nessus web user interface (https://localhost:8834/):

  1. Click to start a New Scan.
  2. Select Advanced Scan.
  3. Navigate to the Plugins tab.
  4. On the top right corner click to Disable All plugins.
  5. On the left side table select Misc. plugin family.
  6. On the right side table select IBM Java 7.0 < 7.0.10.40 / 7.1 < 7.1.4.40 / 8.0 < 8.0.5.30 Multiple Vulnerabilities plugin ID 160349.
  7. Specify the target on the Settings tab and click to Save the scan.
  8. Run the scan.

Here are a few examples of how to run the plugin in the command line. Note that the examples below demonstrate the usage on the Linux / Unix platform.

Basic usage:

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl ibm_java_2019_01_15.nasl -t <IP/HOST>

Run the plugin with audit trail message on the console:

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -a ibm_java_2019_01_15.nasl -t <IP/HOST>

Run the plugin with trace script execution written to the console (useful for debugging):

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -T - ibm_java_2019_01_15.nasl -t <IP/HOST>

Run the plugin with using a state file for the target and updating it (useful for running multiple plugins on the target):

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -K /tmp/state ibm_java_2019_01_15.nasl -t <IP/HOST>
