Synopsis

IBM Java is affected by multiple vulnerabilities.

Description

The version of IBM Java installed on the remote host is prior to 6.0 < 6.0.16.20 / 6.1 < 6.1.8.20 / 7.0 < 7.0.9.30 / 7.1 < 7.1.3.30 / 8.0 < 8.0.2.10. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the IBM Security Update January 2016 advisory.

- The J9 JVM in IBM SDK, Java Technology Edition 6 before SR16 FP20, 6 R1 before SR8 FP20, 7 before SR9 FP30, and 7 R1 before SR3 FP30 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information or inject data by invoking non-public interface methods. (CVE-2015-5041)

- The png_convert_to_rfc1123 function in png.c in libpng 1.0.x before 1.0.64, 1.2.x before 1.2.54, and 1.4.x before 1.4.17 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive process memory information via crafted tIME chunk data in an image file, which triggers an out-of-bounds read. (CVE-2015-7981)

- Integer underflow in the png_check_keyword function in pngwutil.c in libpng 0.90 through 0.99, 1.0.x before 1.0.66, 1.1.x and 1.2.x before 1.2.56, 1.3.x and 1.4.x before 1.4.19, and 1.5.x before 1.5.26 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a space character as a keyword in a PNG image, which triggers an out-of-bounds read. (CVE-2015-8540)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Apply the appropriate patch according to the IBM Security Update January 2016 advisory.

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -a ibm_java_2016_01_01.nasl -t <IP/HOST>

Run the plugin with trace script execution written to the console (useful for debugging):

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -T - ibm_java_2016_01_01.nasl -t <IP/HOST>

Run the plugin with using a state file for the target and updating it (useful for running multiple plugins on the target):

/opt/nessus/bin/nasl -K /tmp/state ibm_java_2016_01_01.nasl -t <IP/HOST>
