Synopsis
The remote Debian host is missing a security-related update.
Description
Several remote vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Wireshark network traffic analyzer, which may lead to the execution of arbitrary code or denial of service. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project identifies the following problems :
- CVE-2009-4377 A NULL pointer dereference was found in the SMB/SMB2 dissectors.
- CVE-2010-0304 Several buffer overflows were found in the LWRES dissector.
Solution
Upgrade the Wireshark packages.
For the stable distribution (lenny), these problems have been fixed in version 1.0.2-3+lenny8.

How to Run
Here is how to run the Debian DSA-1983-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities as a standalone plugin via the Nessus web user interface (https://localhost:8834/):
- Click to start a New Scan.
- Select Advanced Scan.
- Navigate to the Plugins tab.
- On the top right corner click to Disable All plugins.
- On the left side table select Debian Local Security Checks plugin family.
- On the right side table select Debian DSA-1983-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities plugin ID 44847.
- Specify the target on the Settings tab and click to Save the scan.
- Run the scan.
